01. Collaborative Research on Commerciable Biotechnology
  • Collaborative research under Agenda18 is pushed forward by the Next Generation BioGreen 21 Program (NGBP) and National Agriculture Genome Program.
  • The first BioGreen21 Program was successfully carried out from 2001 to 2010 while NGBP was launched in January 2011. NGBP is a 10-year program that supports the national economic growth driven by agricultural biotechnology. In its first stage (¡®11~¡¯14), NGBP has developed 330 projects worth US$ 250 million (KR\ 281 billion).


In addition, NGBP is made up of 7 centers with the following research goals:
The Agricultural Genome Center (TAGC)
structural, comparative and functional genomics; bio-informatics and genomics; agriculturally-important plant and microbes
Animal Genomics and Breeding Center (AGBC)
Molecular breeding of livestock based on a genome information; development of genetically-modified livestock with improved traits
Plant Molecular Breeding Center (PMBC)
development of molecular breeding system for major crops; development of useful molecular markers; Identification of valuable genes; development of genetically-modified crops
National Center for GM Crops (NCGC)
development of domestic and global GMO for commercial purpose; GMO risk assessment and management.
Agricultural Drug and Food Center (ADFC)
development and mass production of functional materials from agro-resources; High-value pharmaceuticals substances; commercialization of high-value substances
System & Synthetic Agro-biotech Center (SSAC)
identification and development of useful gene through system biology research; metabolic engineering of organism for agriculture; synthetic biology to produce novel high-value substances
Animal Bioreactor and Xenotrans plantation Center (CABX)
analysis of immunological rejection response of bio-organ; development of genetically-modified animals producing novel pharmaceuticals
  • The Next Generation BioGreen 21 Program strengthens the competitiveness of the agricultural sector through agricultural R&D and established pipelines from basic research to Ag-Biotech product development.


National Agriculture Genome Program:
1) Millennium Agricultural Living Resource Genome Project: developing of resources for sequencing of agricultural living resources (original key group setup, characteristic analysis of resources), new genome sequencing of agricultural living resources (analysis of expressome and chromosome, reference genome sequencing and establishment database)
2) Agricultural Bio-informatics Advance Program: unified management system of agriculture bio-information and advanced Database, integrated service for agricultural bio-informatics hub
3) International Cooperation Program: global bio-informatics network
  • The Next Generation BioGreen 21 Program strengthens the competitiveness of the agricultural sector through agricultural R&D and established pipelines from basic research to Ag-Biotech product development.
