05.Development of Novel and Basic Agricultural Biotechnology
  • The objective of this agenda is to develop fundamental and novel biotechnologies and produce the bio-crops against climate changes using high-throughput crop transformation and phenomics technologies. Through this agenda, cutting-edge genomics and bioinformatics will be used with the agriculturally-important plants and microbes. Critical to this agenda are the meaningful knowledge derived from bio-information. Hence, structural and functional genomics as well as operation of national database will be implemented as a result of completion of the Genome Project for plants (rice, Chinese cabbage, radish) and microbe (a pathogen of rice bacterial blight disease) and the conduct of a follow-up research on functional genomics to explore valuable information such useful genes, gene network models, resources for molecular breeding, etc.
  • A National Agricultural Genome Program was also launched with the goal to generate reference genome of agricultural resources. Currently, the program is dedicated to the de novo sequencing of crops, horticultural plants mushrooms, and microbes. Also, using the natural germplasms and sequenced genome data, functional studies will be done in cabbage.
  • Lastly, the National Agricultural Biotechnology Information Center (NABIC) will serve national hub of agricultural bio-information. Also, the integrated web service will provide comprehensive collection of research data as well as user-friendly analysis tools to academies, research institutes, and industries.   • Research activities under this agenda include


    (1) discovery and development of functional genes and new metabolites,
    (2) regulation physiological functions, and
    (3) development of high-value crop materials for the industries using recombinant DNA technology. Omics technologies including transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome are used to analyze the complex gene-associated metabolic pathways and developing core technologies to control metabolic pathways. The core gene-molecular technologies are also applied with the aim of developing high value-added crops.
  • Technology convergence is also applied to regulate artificial lights and control growth environment for crops to increase yields. In addition, research on the development of functional genes and high value-added biological materials is also indispensable.
  • ¡°Climate Genes¡± are being isolated based on bioinformatics and functional analysis in order to keep crop productivity and quality sustainable and resilient to climate changes. Assessment of environmental risk and food safety aims at identifying and characterizing the risks associated with Genetic Modification plant cultivation. This is done to provide the tools necessary for characterizing environmental risks, food safety, and designing measures to manage them. There are experimental fields to study the gene flow, genetic diversity, and population structure. For food safety, analyses of the characteristics associated with food toxin, allergens, and substantial equivalence between non-transgenic and transgenic crops are also being done.
